Walking for weight loss: what actually moves the needle

Sunup Diet guide

How far, how fast and how often to walk if the goal is losing weight, plus the breakfast habit that decides whether the walk counts.

Walking works for weight loss, but not for the reason most people assume. A brisk 45-minute walk burns a modest number of calories. What it really changes is the shape of the day that follows.

Frequency beats intensity. Five or six walks a week at a conversational-but-brisk pace outperform two hard sessions, because the habit survives bad weather and busy weeks.

Aim for 30 to 45 minutes at a pace where you can talk but not sing. Add a gentle hill once a week. Do not chase step counts at the cost of consistency.

Walk before you eat. A pre-breakfast walk sets the tone for the first meal, and the first meal usually sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Then eat protein first. Thirty grams of protein at breakfast reliably reduces mid-morning snacking more than any willpower strategy. Eggs, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, or a protein-forward smoothie.

Measure weekly, not daily. Weight fluctuates by a kilo or two with hydration and salt. A weekly average trending down is the only signal worth reacting to.

The people who keep it up almost never do it alone. Walking with a small, fixed group turns the decision into an appointment.
