How to find a walking group near you

Sunup Diet guide

Where to look for local walking groups, what questions to ask before your first walk, and what to do when there is not one in your area yet.

If you have searched for a walking group near you and come up short, you are not unusual. Most groups are informal and never appear anywhere searchable.

Start with the places groups actually live: community centre noticeboards, local parks departments, library bulletin boards, neighbourhood social groups, and workplace wellness channels. Independent running shops often know the walking crowd too.

Before your first walk, ask four questions. What time does the group leave and does it wait? How long is the route and how hilly? What pace do people walk? And is the meeting point lit and public?

Turn up five minutes early on the first day, tell someone your name, and put one person from the group into your phone. That single contact is what makes week two happen.

If there is no group near you, start one. Four people and a fixed time is a group. Pick a sunrise slot, name a lit meeting spot, and publish it so the next person searching can find you rather than giving up.
